China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina) is a large-scale state-owned company approved by the State Council on the basis of China National Bluestar (Group) Corporation (Bluestar), China National Haohua Chemical (Group) Corporation (Haohua or CHC) and other companies affiliated with the former Ministry of Chemical Industry. Headquartered in Beijing, ChemChina was formally inaugurated on May 9th, 2004, and administrated by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council of China.

The development positioning of ChemChina is "Traditional Chemicals, Advanced Materials", meaning that she will succeed the assets of previous generations, develop advanced chemical materials, basic chemical materials and agrochemicals in the process of restructuring SOEs, and extend properly upstream and downstream.

ChemChina carries out investment, shareholding, management and operations as approved by the state. There are currently six sectors in ChemChina industries: advanced chemical materials and specialty chemicals, oil processing and chemical raw materials, agrochemicals, chlor-alkali chemicals, rubber processing and rubbers & plastics equipment and science and R&D sector. A relatively complete chemical industry layout incorporating scientific & technological development, engineering design, production & operation, domestic and foreign trade has come into being, making ChemChina one of the top domestic chemical groups in universal strength.

ChemChina has 9 specialized companies namely, China National BlueStar (Group) Corporation, China Haohua Chemical (Group) Corporation (CHC), ChemChina Agrochemical Corporation, China National Chemical Equipment Corporation (CNCE), China National Chemical Advanced Materials Corporation, ChemChina Oil & Gas Corporation, ChemChina International Holding Company, China BlueStar Construction Engineering Bureau, and China National Chemical Information Center (CNCIC). It has 118 subsidiary companies in production and operation and 25 R&D institutions. It is the holding company of ten-plus A-share listed companies, including BlueStar Cleaning, Star New Materials, Shenyang Chemical, Sanonda, Hechi Chemical, Cangzhou Dahua, Zhongtai Chemical, Heilongjiang Heihua, Tianke Co., Aeolus Tire and Yellowsea Rubber, etc. ChemChina also owns overseas companies such as Adisseo in France, Bluestar Silicones International and Qenos in Australia. Meanwhile, it has built up production plants, R&D bases in 140 countries worldwide. A well-rounded marketing system and customer service base has been already in shape.

ChemChina has a few privileges authorized by the central government. That means, it can do business with foreign customers directly and is allowed with exclusive right to do specialty chemicals business. In addition, ChemChina also has the right to approve go-abroad applications from our employees.

In past three years, ChemChina has achieved a high growth. Up to now, it has become a big shot in chemical business, and both the asset value and revenues hit a record exceeding RMB100 billion, ranked 35th among China's top 500 enterprises, according to National Bureau of Statistics of China.

Being as the main force of China chemical industry, ChemChina performs pretty well and takes a leading position in many fields.

In terms of advanced materials, ChemChina possesses quite a few state-of-the-art production units and R&D institutions for dozens of high-tech and value-added products, including organic silicone, organic fluorine, methionine, PBT, PVC paste resin, POM, PC, PPO, PPS, epoxy resin, PU, PHB (polyphenyl p-hydroxybenzoate), sulfur hexafluoride, gas-phase silica white, titanium dioxide, photosensitive chemicals, high performance fibers, industrial coatings. Among them, the output of methionine ranks the second in the world while organic silicone ranks the third, and PVC paste resin, PBT resin and industrial silicon all rank the first in Asia, in addition, fluoro rubber, fumed silica and epoxy resin rank the first in China. About 95 percent of ChemChina's color developing agents for imaging chemicals are exported, which makes it the top player in China. The company's chemical cleaning and water treatment sector occupies 90 percent of the domestic market share.

In the sector of oil processing and chemical raw materials, ChemChina has 12 refineries and the annual crude oil processing output is totaled 20 million tons. Through the technological process of "producing chemicals from oil refining," they provide intermediates and raw materials for advanced chemical materials and specialty chemicals. The main organic raw materials of ChemChina include ethylene, propylene, butadiene, phenol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, maleic anhydride, 1,4-butanediol, tetrahydrofuran, acrylic acid, nonylphenol, bisphenol A and TDI. Within these materials, the equipped scale of bisphenol A and nonylphenol rank the first in China. ChemChina also owns the largest TDI manufacturing facility in China.

In the chlor-alkali chemicals sector, ChemChina is characterized by a low-cost, recycling economy and clean manufacturing. Its output of caustic soda and neoprene rubber rank the first in China, propylene oxide and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) rank the second. The manufacturing scale of PVC paste resin is the largest in Asia and the third largest in the world.

In the sector of rubber processing and chemical equipment, ChemChina owns production lines of all-steel radial tires, semi-steel radial tires, aviation tires, and giant engineering tires, with an annual output of over 10 million. It can also produce polysulfide rubber, rubber seals, new process flexible and rigid carbon black, etc. ChemChina's production capacity of rubber & plastics equipment ranks the third in the world, and it is the only company in China that can produce ion-exchange membrane electrolyzers, with the third-largest output in the world.

In the agrochemical sector, ChemChina has become the largest pesticide producer in China and has over 100 products ranging from insecticide, herbicide, fungicide and intermediates of pesticide, whose outputs mostly rank the first in China.

In the R&D sector, ChemChina owns 25 research and design institutes, accounting for 70 percent of national-level chemical research power. It has six national-level research centers of liquid separation membrane, organic silicone, and methane chemicals, three technology centers authenticated by the state, 13 provincial-level technological centers. ChemChina is also the supporting company for 19 national chemical associations such as China Silicone Fluorine Material Association. In order to encourage independent innovation and promote commercialization of new technologies, ChemChina has launched ChemChina Science and Technology Fund to enhance industrialization through innovation. Technology with self-owned IPRs such as pressure swing adsorption, organic silicone, organic fluorine, acetic acid, carbon black, hydrogen peroxide, polycarbonate, polyoxymethylene and large scale banbury mixer vulcanizer have been widely used in the domestic and international market. ChemChina possesses the largest industrial base for liquid separation membranes, and it is outstanding in fields of industrial water treatment, municipal sewage recycling, saline water and seawater desalinization and water supply for pharmaceutical and food production, etc. It has also made remarkable achievements in rubber aging-resistance, catalysis and purification technologies, chemical mining, coal gasification, environmental protection, marine chemistry, etc. So far, ChemChina has won 148 national and provincial awards, owns 1,162 IPRs. As to the number of the patents, ChemChina is ranked 6th, while innovation ability is ranked 12th among China's key central enterprises.

China National Chemical Information Center (CNCIC) is the largest center in the chemical industry of China specialized in information collecting, research, and service. Equipped with the branch library of engineering and technology and a technological result information platform under the Ministry of Science and Technology, it provides professional research, consulting and periodical publication services. CNCIC has established the first chemical information exchange and B2B trading network, thus, it forms a complete trading network and information system for the international and domestic market.

In the future, ChemChina will further improve its business structure and pay more attention to its key businesses. As a Chinese saying goes "Harmony brings wealth," ChemChina will try to find a harmonious strategy to avoid eroding the benefits of both upstream and downstream operators. To make this come true, ChemChina will tap into its innovation ability and use differentia competition strategy to build up its advantage in advanced materials and specialty chemicals. ChemChina will build itself into an even bigger and stronger chemical group corporation with international competitiveness.
